India Bids Adieu to the Queen of Versatility: Asha Bhosle Cremated with State Honours

The nation bid a tearful farewell to the “Nightingale of India,” Asha Bhosle, as she was cremated with full state honors in Mumbai on Monday, April 13, 2026. The legendary playback singer, whose career spanned over eight decades and thousands of songs, passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital. Her death was attributed to multi-organ failure following a brief hospitalization for a chest infection.

The final journey of the musical icon began at her residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, where her mortal remains were kept for public viewing. Draped in the national tricolour and surrounded by white lilies, the singer looked peaceful as a steady stream of dignitaries, film stars, and heartbroken fans arrived to pay their respects.

Among the first to arrive were cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali, who spent time comforting Asha’s granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle. From the film industry, actors like Tabu, Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, and Aamir Khan were seen paying their final tributes. Veteran stars such as Helen, Asha Parekh, and Padmini Kolhapure also arrived to say goodbye to their long-time colleague and friend.

The political landscape was well-represented as well. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, attended the ceremony to ensure the singer received the highest honors for her immense contribution to Indian culture. At the crematorium, the Mumbai Police gave a ceremonial guard of honor. In a moving tribute, singer Shaan performed a somber melody before the final rites were conducted. Her son, Anand Bhosle, performed the last rites and lit the funeral pyre at approximately 5:30 PM.
