In a move that has surprised many fans of Hindi cinema, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has officially confirmed that his highly anticipated war drama, Gorkha, has been permanently shelved. The film, which was intended to chronicle the heroic life of Major General Ian Cardozo, will no longer be moving forward into production.
The announcement came during a recent interaction where the actor addressed long-standing rumors regarding the project’s status. For over three years, the film had remained in a state of uncertainty, leading to intense speculation among industry insiders and audiences alike.
Originally announced in October 2021, Gorkha was set to be a significant collaboration between Akshay Kumar’s Cape of Good Films and Aanand L. Rai’s Colour Yellow Productions. The story was poised to celebrate the bravery of Major General Ian Cardozo, a legendary officer of the 5th Gorkha Rifles who famously amputated his own leg with a khukri during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War.
The project was envisioned as a grand tribute to the Indian Army, with National Award-winning director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan at the helm. However, despite the initial excitement and the release of a striking first-look poster, the film faced immediate hurdles.
The primary reasons for shelving the project appear to be a mix of technical challenges and concerns regarding factual accuracy. Shortly after the film was announced, veterans from the Indian Army raised questions about certain historical depictions in the proposed script.
Reports suggest that Akshay Kumar, known for his deep respect for the armed forces, was hesitant to proceed with a story that carried any “shadow of doubt.” A source close to the development stated:
“Akshay is extremely sensitive about how the military is portrayed on screen. When factual clarifications were requested by those who served alongside Major General Cardozo, the team decided it was better to pause than to deliver a story that wasn’t 100% authentic.”
Producer Aanand L. Rai had previously hinted at these struggles, noting that the “factual clarifications” required significant time and research, eventually leading to the collective decision to stop work on the film entirely.
While Gorkha may be a closed chapter, Akshay Kumar’s schedule remains packed with diverse projects. The actor is currently shifting his focus toward his upcoming horror-comedy, Bhooth Bangla, which has already generated significant buzz and strong advance ticket sales.
Additionally, Kumar has several other high-profile releases lined up for 2026, including sequels to some of his most beloved franchises. Though fans are disappointed to lose a promising war biopic, the consensus in the industry is that maintaining the integrity of a real-life hero’s story was a move of professional maturity. To know
