Kajol Opens Up About 3-Year Struggle Parenting Daughter Nysa: “We Were Both Irrational”

In a refreshingly honest conversation, Bollywood icon Kajol has shed light on the complexities of mother-daughter relationships in the Gen Z era. Speaking on a recent podcast with Lilly Singh, the Maharagni actress admitted that her relationship with her daughter, Nysa Devgan, wasn’t always the picture-perfect bond seen on social media. In fact, Kajol revealed they faced a grueling three-year period filled with intense arguments and emotional distance.

Kajol traced the root of the friction back to when Nysa turned 12. As hormones kicked in, the actress found herself in a cycle of constant conflict with her daughter.

“We were all over the place,” Kajol shared during the interview. “We were fighting, and we were both irrational at times. We were both illogical at times.” The actress described a dynamic where both mother and daughter reached a stalemate, with neither willing to listen to the other. “Both of us were like, ‘I don’t want to listen to you, I don’t want to talk to you,'” she recalled.

Realizing that the tension was becoming unsustainable, Kajol decided to make a conscious shift in her behavior. Acknowledging her role as the parent, she resolved to stop the cycle of constant arguing.

“Being the adult, I stood up and I said, ‘I should be a little more rational,'” she explained. Her new strategy was to stop fighting and instead focus on “talking at her” until Nysa was ready to start listening. However, she soon discovered that the real breakthrough didn’t come from talking more, but from talking less.

The actress revealed that her biggest learning as a parent came when she stopped trying to “fix” or “direct” her daughter and started simply being a witness to her thoughts.

“I realized that it was more about just me sitting down and me listening to her. It was not about talking so much. It was just about giving her space to talk herself and to be heard. That made the biggest difference,” Kajol admitted.

She noted that once she gave Nysa the room to figure things out on her own, the friction began to melt away. This shift from “instructing” to “relating” helped bridge the generational gap that had caused so much stress for nearly three years.

The timing of these revelations follows Nysa’s 23rd birthday earlier this month, which Kajol celebrated with a touching tribute on Instagram. The actress described herself as “blessed” and called her daughter “perfect,” signaling that the turbulent years are firmly in the past.

On the professional front, Kajol continues to explore themes of motherhood on screen, having recently starred in Maa and Sarzameen. While her reel-life mothers are often protective and fierce, her real-life parenting journey serves as a candid reminder that even for superstars, raising a Gen Z child requires patience, humility, and the occasional need to simply sit back and listen.
