More than 16 years after the original film redefined the landscape of Indian cinema, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel to the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots is currently in development.

In a move that has sent shockwaves of excitement through the film industry and global fanbases alike, Khan revealed that director Rajkumar Hirani and screenwriter Abhijat Joshi are actively shaping the next chapter of the story. During a recent media interaction, the actor shared that the narrative will not be a direct continuation from where the last film ended, but will instead feature a significant time leap.

According to Khan, the script is being designed to follow the iconic trio Rancho, Farhan, and Raju nearly a decade after the events of the first film. “Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now,” Khan stated. “I have heard the narration, and it is wonderful. While the script still needs some final touches, the story itself is very strong and unusual. It maintains the same humor we loved in the first part but picks up with the characters 10 years later.”

The original film, which was loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, became a cultural phenomenon for its scathing yet humorous critique of the Indian education system. It remains one of the highest-grossing and most influential films in Bollywood history.

Khan expressed immense personal enthusiasm for the project, confirming his return as the eccentric and brilliant Phunsukh Wangdu, better known as Rancho. He praised the creative vision of Hirani and Joshi, noting that the sequel aims to explore how the characters have matured and what new challenges they face in a rapidly changing world.

While the primary cast including R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are widely expected to return to complete the trio, official production timelines and the full ensemble list have yet to be finalized.

Interestingly, Khan also shared that this project has taken priority over another planned collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani. A biopic on the “Father of Indian Cinema,” Dadasaheb Phalke, has reportedly been put on hold as the creative team felt the script required further revision. This shift in focus suggests that 3 Idiots 2 has become the primary creative objective for the duo.

As the script enters its final stages of refinement, the confirmation marks the end of years of speculation. Fans are now eagerly waiting to see if the sequel can capture the “All Is Well” magic that made the original a timeless classic. To
