The highly anticipated historical epic Raja Shivaji has finally arrived in theaters, and while the scale of the production is making headlines, it is a heartwarming story about the film’s casting that is capturing the public’s attention. Actor-director Riteish Deshmukh recently shared an endearing behind-the-scenes anecdote about how Bollywood superstar Salman Khan became a part of the project.
According to Deshmukh, he did not actually approach Salman Khan for a role in the film. Instead, the superstar took it upon himself to ensure he was included in the grand retelling of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life.
The revelation came during a recent promotional interview where Riteish recounted a conversation he had with Salman during a New Year’s gathering. When Salman inquired about the progress of the film and when shooting would commence, Riteish informed him that the cameras were set to roll that very month.
Without hesitation, Salman reportedly asked, “Which role am I playing?”
When Riteish admitted that he hadn’t initially planned a specific part for him, the “Tiger” star was adamant. Riteish recalled Salman saying, “No, no, no… you can’t make the film without me, I have to be in it.” The director noted that it was Salman’s sense of warmth and genuine belonging to the project that eventually led to the creation of a special appearance for him.
This is not the first time the two actors have shared a close professional bond. Salman Khan previously made a memorable cameo in Riteish’s Marathi debut Lai Bhaari and featured in a popular song for his directorial debut, Ved.
In Raja Shivaji, Salman Khan takes on the role of Jeeva Mahala, a legendary and loyal aide to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His character is expected to be a significant highlight of the film, particularly with rumors of a high-stakes screen presence alongside the film’s primary antagonist, played by Sanjay Dutt.
Released on May 1, 2026, to coincide with Maharashtra Day, Raja Shivaji is being hailed as one of the most ambitious projects in Marathi cinema history. Produced by Mumbai Film Company and Jio Studios, the film features a massive budget and an ensemble cast that includes:
Riteish Deshmukh as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sanjay Dutt as Afzal Khan
Abhishek Bachchan as Sambhaji Shahaji Bhonsale, Vidya Balan as Badi Begum, Fardeen Khan as Shah Jahan and Bhagyashree as Jijabai.
The film has already seen record-breaking advance ticket sales, signaling a massive opening at the box office. With a runtime of over three hours, the Marathi version offers a deep dive into the early life and battles of the Maratha founder, while a slightly shorter Hindi version caters to a wider national audience.
As the film begins its theatrical run, the story of Salman Khan’s self-insisted cameo serves as a testament to the respect the legendary Maratha king commands across the Indian film industry and the deep personal bond between two of its biggest stars. To
