Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair has finally unveiled the first look and cast for her long-awaited dream project, a biopic on the legendary Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil. Titled Amri, the film will feature breakout star Anjali Sivaraman in the titular role, capturing the life of the pioneering artist who redefined modern Indian art before her tragic death at the age of 28. Mira Nair, known for global masterpieces like Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake, shared that Sher-Gil’s work has been a primary source of inspiration for her own cinematic vision for decades, teaching her “how to see” the world and its people. The project, which was initially delayed due to the pandemic, has now transitioned from its earlier casting stages to a full-fledged international production that is currently being filmed across locations in India and Hungary.

The biopic boasts a prestigious ensemble cast that brings together talent from both Bollywood and Hollywood. Priyanka Chopra Jonas joins the project in a significant role as Madame Azurie and also serves as an executive producer, further cementing her influence in global cinema. Versatile actor Jaideep Ahlawat has been cast as Amrita’s father, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, while Academy Award nominee Emily Watson will portray her mother, Marie-Antoinette Gottesman. The film also features Jim Sarbh as Karl Khandalavala and Anjana Vasan as Indira Sher-Gil, creating a rich tapestry of characters that shaped the artist’s turbulent yet brilliant journey. By tracing her footsteps through Hungary, France, and India, Amri aims to explore the deep cultural tensions and the restless search for identity that defined Sher-Gil as both a woman and a revolutionary artist.

Producer Samudrika Arora highlighted that the film is a deeply human story about the challenge of belonging to two wildly different worlds without losing oneself in the process. The narrative will delve into Amrita’s defiance of social conventions and her unwavering determination to create a visual language that was entirely her own, often sparking scandal in her personal life. For Anjali Sivaraman, who gained fame with her roles in Class and Bad Girl, this role marks a significant milestone as she steps into the shoes of one of the 20th century’s greatest painters. As the production nears completion, the film is already generating significant festival buzz, promising to be a landmark release that honors the legacy of a visionary who remains a beacon of inspiration for modern generations.
