The Indian film industry has always thrived on the candid memories of its veteran creators, and a recent interaction has brought a delightful yet nostalgic chapter of Bollywood history to the forefront. Acclaimed director David Dhawan, known for shaping the landscape of commercial Hindi comedies, recently shared a fascinating throwback memory concerning the late legendary actor Rishi Kapoor. Speaking during a promotional interaction with his actor-son Varun Dhawan ahead of the theatrical release of their upcoming project Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, David opened up about his early transition from being a film editor to a mainstream director. He revealed that during the early nineties, prominent producer Nitin Manmohan approached him to direct the project Bol Radha Bol after viewing a few completed reels of his work on Shola Aur Shabnam. While the young director was eager to grab the opportunity, convincing the lead star of the project proved to be a completely different challenge altogether.

According to David, Rishi Kapoor was initialy highly reluctant to work under his direction simply because he was relatively new to the field at that specific time. The veteran actor openly questioned the producer about bringing in an inexperienced director for such a massive script, even threatening that he would not do the project. However, the producer stood firm on his creative choice, assuring the legendary star that David would direct the project regardless of his final decision. Upon realizing the producer’s absolute faith and finding the script highly impressive, Rishi eventually agreed to cooperate, and the movie went on to become a major commercial success at the box office. David fondly recalled that this initial friction surprisingly paved the way for a beautiful lifelong friendship, transforming him into one of Rishi’s absolute favorite directors in the industry and leading to multiple successful future collaborations including blockbusters like Yaraana, Chashme Baddoor, Eena Meena Deeka, and Yeh Hai Jalwa.

Reflecting deeper on Rishi Kapoor’s unique and blunt personality, David shared that the iconic actor possessed a distinct habit of playfully teasing and testing the people working around him. He explained that Rishi loved to rag absolutely everyone on the film sets, and this unapologetic behavior was not just limited to industry outsiders or crew members. David hilariously revealed that the actor did not spare his own family either, noting that he would actively rag his own son, Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor, in the exact same manner. The heartfelt revelation highlights the candid, filter-free attitude that Rishi Kapoor was globally celebrated for throughout his illustrious six-decade-long journey in cinema. As David Dhawan wraps up his nostalgic trip down memory lane, the beautifully shared anecdote serves as a timeless reminder of the late actor’s unforgettable presence, his high standards for professional collaboration, and his playful nature that continues to live vividly in the hearts of his close industry peers.
