The 1991 romantic comedy movie Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin remains an absolute favorite for Bollywood fans, mainly because of the incredible chemistry between the lead actors. In a recent detailed interview, actress Pooja Bhatt took a trip down memory lane to reflect on her time working alongside superstar Aamir Khan on that iconic set. Addressing long-standing rumors from the nineties about their relationship, she openly admitted that there was a definite spark and a strong sense of mutual attraction between them when the cameras were rolling, though it never crossed over into a real-life romance. She explained with a laugh that she was quite attractive back then, so no one could really blame him if he felt something, but she clarified that the strong connection they shared simply did not bloom into anything tangible or of serious consequence outside of their roles.

While reminiscing about their everyday interactions on the sets of the film, which was directed by her father Mahesh Bhatt, Pooja described her bond with Aamir as a classic Tom and Jerry dynamic. The two young stars were constantly bickering, pulling each other’s legs, and trying to put one another in their place, which prevented things from getting overly serious. She found him completely delightful to work with, noting that they were genuinely in love with each other’s characters during production. However, outside of those cinematic moments, Aamir was a married man at the time, having quietly tied the knot with his first wife, Reena Dutta, a few years before the movie became a massive box-office success.

The actress also shed some light on Aamir Khan’s early days as an intense perfectionist, a trait that has defined his legendary career in Indian cinema. She recalled how he was incredibly hands-on and deeply invested in every minor detail of the filmmaking process, to the point where some people on the crew might have found his involvement a bit intrusive. For instance, he would frequently question her choice of wardrobe, even asking why she was wearing such high heels because he felt it did not match the grounded nature of her character. Rather than being annoyed, Pooja looked back at those moments as great learning experiences, praising his extreme precision and commitment to making every scene as authentic as possible.

To illustrate just how sharp Aamir’s instincts were even back then, Pooja shared an amusing behind-the-scenes story about the famous sailor cap his character wore throughout the movie. The cap actually belonged to Aamir’s young nephew, Imran Khan, and when Aamir first brought it to the set, the entire production crew mocked it and told him he could not wear a child’s hat in a major film. Despite the teasing, Aamir stood his ground and trusted his creative vision, and his stubbornness paid off massively when the movie came out. The unique hat instantly became a massive nationwide fashion trend, with exact copies being sold on almost every street corner across the country, proving that his attention to detail was exactly what the audience wanted.
