Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2013 romantic drama Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela remains a landmark film in modern Indian cinema, remembered for its vibrant visuals and the captivating on-screen chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. One of the massive highlights of the movie was Priyanka Chopra’s unforgettable special appearance in the blockbuster track Ram Chahe Leela. However, a fascinating piece of trivia has emerged from an archival interview revealing that this chartbuster was never the original plan. According to a past interaction with the legendary late choreographer Saroj Khan, a completely different song had been finalized for the film, but it had to be abruptly scrapped at the last minute after superstar Salman Khan raised strong objections to the lyrics.
Saroj Khan had shared that the original track intended for Priyanka Chopra’s special dance sequence was titled Thappad Se Dar Nahi Lagta, Lagta Hai Pyaar Se. The major issue arose because this exact phrase served as the most iconic and widely popularized dialogue spoken by Sonakshi Sinha and Salman Khan in the massive 2010 blockbuster action movie Dabangg. When Salman Khan learned that the production team of Ram-Leela was turning his trademark movie line into a full-fledged song for another banner, he reportedly expressed his deep dissatisfaction. Out of respect for the Bollywood superstar and to avoid any unnecessary industry conflict or copyright friction, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali made the tough call to pull the plug on the track entirely.
The sudden decision to shelve the project created significant complications behind the scenes, particularly for the dance team that had been working relentlessly on the sequence. Saroj Khan revealed that she had already spent ten full days conceptualizing, recording, and extensively rehearsing the detailed choreography for the original song alongside Priyanka Chopra. Her routines included specific expressive movements like fastening a blouse button, tucking a handkerchief at the waistline, and a graceful gesture of drying wet hair. Although these creative steps were fully finalized and recorded on video during the practice sessions, the rehearsals were stopped on the tenth day due to the script and lyrical changes.
The veteran dance director also alleged that she faced professional disappointment afterward, claiming she was never compensated for her ten days of labor and was excluded when the replacement track, Ram Chahe Leela, was eventually composed and assigned to choreographer Vishnu Deva. Despite her absence from the final shoot, she claimed that several of the distinctive physical movements she had recorded during those initial ten days were still retained and integrated into the final video cut. While the replacement track went on to become an iconic musical hit of that year, this lesser-known behind-the-scenes incident highlights how a single piece of dialogue from a Salman Khan film completely reshaped the soundtrack of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali masterpiece.
