Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, get legal relief before OTT release

The digital rollout of director Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster action film Dhurandhar: The Revenge has successfully cleared a major hurdle following a crucial decision by a Mumbai civil court. Filmmaker and writer Santosh Kumar RS had approached the judiciary seeking an urgent ad-interim injunction to halt the film’s scheduled over-the-top streaming platform release, alleging that the makers had copied essential elements, story structures, and dialogues from his original script titled D-Saheb. However, the civil court firmly rejected the plaintiff’s plea for a temporary stay order, allowing the high-profile sequel to proceed with its digital premiere on the JioHotstar streaming network exactly as planned without any sudden operational delays.

In the detailed ruling, Judge Yunus Kharadi observed that the plaintiff failed to establish a prima facie case of copyright infringement because no comparative material or analytical breakdown was placed on record to actively demonstrate any striking similarities between the two scripts. Furthermore, the court highlighted that the plaintiff had suppressed critical facts, noting that he had previously filed a similar writ petition before the Karnataka High Court which was dismissed. The judge stated that by failing to disclose this past litigation, the plaintiff did not approach the court with clean hands, which heavily damaged the credibility of his urgent request. The court also took note of the defense’s argument that third-party digital rights had already been legally established and that staying the release at the eleventh hour would cause massive, irreparable financial losses to the production banners, whereas the writer could easily be compensated financially later if he manages to prove his claims during the full trial.

Represented by a legal team from DSK Legal, director Aditya Dhar and B62 Studios successfully argued that the complete storyline for the cinematic project was officially registered with the Screenwriters Association back in September 2023, long before the plaintiff brought forward his complaints. This legal victory comes as a major relief for the makers of the star-studded franchise, which features a prominent ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, and Sara Arjun. The franchise has established an unprecedented box-office record by crossing the massive three-thousand crore mark worldwide across its theatrical runs. With the legal paths now cleared of immediate injunctions, the massive audience base can experience the grand cinematic venture in multiple languages from the comfort of their homes.
