The box office journey for director David Dhawan’s latest multi-starrer romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has hit a massive roadblock, experiencing a steep and disappointing crash on its crucial first Monday test. Starring Bollywood heartthrob Varun Dhawan in the lead role alongside popular leading ladies Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, the out-and-out family entertainer had managed to pull off a respectable, albeit steady, opening weekend at the ticket windows due to the footfalls from family audiences. However, the momentum completely vanished as the working week commenced, with the film failing to sustain its numbers across major cinema circuits. According to early box office tracking reports, the comedy of errors witnessed a massive downward slide on its fourth day of theatrical release, managing to bring in a low single-day net collection of just two crore rupees, signaling a tough uphill task for the project in the coming days.

The latest single-day earnings indicate a sharp drop of over sixty percent from its weekend business, presenting a highly worrisome trend for the producers and distributors involved. The film originally kicked off its box office run with an initial domestic net collection of seven point five zero crore rupees on its opening Friday, followed by a slight dip to seven point two five crore rupees on Saturday. Thanks to the typical Sunday surge, the movie recorded its highest single-day haul by touching the nine crore rupee mark, which closed its three-day opening weekend with a decent domestic net total of twenty-four crore rupees. However, the dramatic plunge on Day 4 brings the overall four-day cumulative domestic net collections to approximately twenty-six crore rupees, while the total India gross collection slowly crawls past the thirty-one crore rupee mark, a figure that falls short of expectations given the massive screen count and wide release layout.

Trade experts point out that the main factors contributing to this sudden crash are the highly mixed to negative reviews from film critics and the lukewarm word-of-mouth generated across social media platforms, with many pointing out that the movie relies heavily on outdated humor and a loud narrative style. The plot follows the chaotic life of Jass, played by Varun Dhawan, whose wife Bani, portrayed by Mrunal Thakur, demands a divorce, prompting him to move on with Pooja Hegde’s character Preet, only for the real madness to break out when both women end up pregnant with his children simultaneously. Despite a massive supporting cast that includes Maniesh Paul, Chunky Panday, Jimmy Sheirgill, Mouni Roy, and Rajpal Yadav, the theater occupancy dropped to a low average of just eleven percent on Monday. Furthermore, the film is facing an incredibly tough time retaining screens due to massive competition from Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s blockbuster pan-India sports action drama Peddi, which has already crossed the monumental one hundred and fifty crore mark in India, leaving David Dhawan’s final directorial venture struggling to find its footing.
