Upasana Singh Says She Was Replaced in Maine Pyar Kiya by Bhagyashree Because ‘I Was Taller Than Salman Khan’

The casting history of Indian cinema is filled with fascinating what-if scenarios, and one of the biggest revelations has emerged regarding the legendary 1989 romantic blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya under the iconic Rajshri Productions banner, the musical romance permanently altered the course of Hindi cinema, launching Salman Khan into superstardom and establishing Bhagyashree as a beloved household name for her role as Suman. However, popular comic actress and television personality Upasana Singh has recently sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry by disclosing that she was actually the original selection for the leading lady’s role. In a candid and deeply emotional interview, the veteran performer opened up about losing the career-defining opportunity at the final hurdle, revealing that the production house dropped her simply because her physical height did not align with their vision for the leading man.

Recalling her early days in the entertainment capital, Upasana Singh shared that she was a young theatre enthusiast studying in Chandigarh who would frequently visit Mumbai with dreams of becoming a mainstream film heroine. During one such visit, she managed to secure a meeting with director Sooraj Barjatya through a production coordinator, which quickly progressed into a brief, informal acting audition. Impressed by her natural dialogue delivery and theatrical background, the filmmaker immediately selected her for the character of Suman from his end. However, the final casting approval required a formal meeting with his father, legendary producer Rajkumar Barjatya, who headed the production company. Upasana met with the senior producer and returned to Chandigarh under the impression that her Bollywood launch was locked, only to face months of painful silence as the promised follow-up call never arrived, leaving her feeling deeply hurt and insulted.

The painful truth behind her quiet replacement finally came to light many years later under highly dramatic circumstances on a completely different film set. In 2003, Upasana Singh was working with Rajshri Productions again for the romantic drama Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, starring Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Kareena Kapoor. While shooting an extensive schedule in the scenic landscapes of Switzerland, producer Rajkumar Barjatya unexpectedly announced to the entire gathered cast and crew that Upasana had been their absolute first choice for Maine Pyar Kiya. Stunned by the public revelation, Upasana finally found the courage to confront the senior producer right then and there, asking him directly why she had been dropped if she was truly his first choice. Rajkumar Barjatya candidly confessed that the sole reason they went in a different direction was because she was considerably taller than Salman Khan, as the makers explicitly wanted a leading lady who looked visibly shorter than the debutant hero to enhance the on-screen romantic chemistry.

Hearing this height-based justification did not sit well with the actress, who immediately pushed back by pointing out that legendary icons like Sridevi were also taller than Salman Khan, yet they successfully shared screen space in prominent projects without any issues. The senior producer then offered an alternative explanation, suggesting that even if she had been cast, she likely would have abandoned her thriving acting career early to settle down after marriage, drawing a parallel to how both Sridevi and Bhagyashree took extended breaks from the limelight. Upasana admitted that this logic made her feel even worse, as she found it highly unfair for a major production house to make a casting decision based on arbitrary assumptions about a young woman’s personal future. The emotional weight of the rejection ran so deep that the actress actively avoided watching the blockbuster romance in theatres for years, jokingly admitting that she feared her sheer frustration might make her react negatively toward Bhagyashree, though she gracefully added that Bhagyashree looked incredibly beautiful and performed her role flawlessly.
