Is Dutton Ranch Replacing Rip Wheeler? Here Is Who Is Taking Over His Role in the New Yellowstone Spin-Off

The premier of the highly anticipated Yellowstone spin-off series Dutton Ranch on Paramount Plus has left fans with a whirlwind of questions regarding the future of their favorite cowboy enforcer, Rip Wheeler. Played brilliantly by Cole Hauser, Rip has long been the heart and muscle of the franchise, serving as John Dutton’s loyal right hand, fixer, and ranch foreman back in Montana. However, as the new series shifts the focus to Texas where Rip and Beth Dutton are trying to build a fresh life together, alarming headlines have surfaced suggesting that the beloved character is being entirely replaced. Fans can officially breathe a sigh of relief as Cole Hauser is definitely not leaving the show, but the nature of his responsibilities has underwent a dramatic transformation that effectively leaves his old position open for a new generation of characters.

The creative team behind the spin-off has clarified that rather than replacing the actor, the show is actually elevating Rip Wheeler into an executive leadership role where he is now in charge of the massive cattle operations at the neighboring ten Petal Ranch. Because his hands are completely full managing this large scale business alongside Beth, Rip can no longer act as the standard on-the-ground enforcer or traditional foreman. To fill this massive structural void back at the main property, the narrative has ingeniously split Rip’s original dual identity across two distinct new characters. A hardworking and fiercely loyal ranch hand named Azul Ramos, played by J.R. Villarreal, has stepped up to handle the traditional day-to-day cowboy duties and maintain standard ranch values, while an intense new character named Zachariah Moss, played by Marc Menchaca, has been brought into the fold.

Zachariah is a gritty cowboy who was recently recruited straight out of prison on Azul’s recommendation, a move that closely mirrors how John Dutton originally took in a young Rip Wheeler years ago. Together with another tough hand named Chet, played by Hart Denton, these fresh faces are dividing Rip’s famous traits, with Azul embodying his unwavering loyalty and hard work, while Chet and Zachariah take on the darker, more ruthless enforcer side of the job that requires getting their hands dirty to protect the empire from rival forces. This calculated change allows Dutton Ranch to explore a completely new dynamic, keeping Cole Hauser at the center of the universe while introducing fresh conflicts that prove the legacy of a true Yellowstone foreman is far too big for just one person to carry.
