Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has found himself in deep legal trouble after the Delhi High Court officially upheld his conviction across multiple long-running cheque bounce cases. The court handed the seasoned comic performer a concurrent three-month prison sentence along with heavy financial penalties for failing to clear multi-crore dues stemming from his 2012 directorial project, Ata Pata Laapata. Amid the intensifying courtroom saga, previous statements made by the actor during an emotional media interaction have resurfaced online, shedding light on his deeply personal perspective regarding the dispute. Addressing reporters during a past press conference, a frustrated Yadav had explicitly downplayed the financial nature of the legal battle, calling the entire nine-crore debt conflict a massive, unnecessary ego clash. He claimed that the prominent lender was not genuinely interested in recovering the money but was instead looking to humiliate him publicly, stating that the person simply wants him to fall at his feet in exchange for resolving the matter.
Reflecting on how a regular financial transaction snowballed into a major criminal prosecution, the actor explained that the entire problem began because the original agreement was a completely verbal deal rooted in mutual trust. Describing the contract as a personal matter, Yadav admitted that he originally traveled to the lender’s corporate office in Laxmi Nagar and blindly signed the legal papers without reading a single line because he trusted the relationship over formal paperwork. According to the actor, the verbal agreement specified that he would return eight crore rupees instead of the initial five crore loan once the film hit theaters, but the production unfortunately collapsed at the box office, generating minimal revenue and triggering immense liability. While his legal counsel later admitted that trusting the lender without checking the paperwork was a critical mistake, Yadav maintained that he had been fully prepared to clear his core dues since 2013 and blamed the opposing party for refusing a fair settlement.
However, the Delhi High Court remained completely unmoved by the actor’s emotional defenses and heavily reprimanded his conduct throughout the prolonged litigation process. Delivering the final verdict, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma pointed out that the judiciary had shown extraordinary indulgence by granting the actor more than two dozen separate opportunities to amicably settle his outstanding debt, yet he repeatedly breached formal undertakings and shifted his legal stances. The legal proceedings took a highly dramatic turn when Yadav openly informed the bench during virtual hearings that he was entirely unwilling to make any further financial payments to the complainant, stating that he would rather choose to serve a prison sentence multiple times over instead of returning the remaining money. The High Court strongly countered this defiance by asserting that while a litigant is free to choose jail time over legal honesty, the law is not a script that can be rewritten at the will of an actor. Alongside the three-month simple imprisonment order, the court directed Yadav to pay a massive fine of 1.05 crore rupees across seven separate complaints, though he has been granted a two-month window to seek relief from the Supreme Court before the prison term is executed.
