The highly anticipated action spectacle Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, directed by Geetu Mohandas and starring Rocking Star Yash, has landed in theaters, but the cinematic experience has left critics and audiences severely underwhelmed. Mounted on a massive scale, the film attempts to blend intense gangster drama with darker fairytale elements in a plot set against old-world Goa. The story follows Raya, played by Yash, a ruthless illegal operator embroiled in violence and complicated family ties, alongside a star-studded cast featuring Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, and Tara Sutaria. However, despite the immense hype and towering visual ambition, the final result turns out to be a soulless, exhausting nightmare that relies heavily on sensory overload while utterly testing the patience of viewers throughout its lengthy runtime.
From the very beginning, the film sacrifices narrative coherence to showcase relentless violence, extravagant action set-pieces, and stylised swagger that quickly become repetitive and hollow. Geetu Mohandas’ direction struggles to find a balance between artistic storytelling and commercial mass cinema, leaving the plot fragmented and filled with uninteresting, plastic characters who lack genuine depth or emotional weight. While Yash attempts to anchor the project through sheer screen presence and even takes on a double role later in the narrative, his performance often feels like an extension of his past roles rather than a fresh evolution. As guns, bloodbaths, and dramatic beat after dramatic beat flood the screen without adequate character motivation or strong music to back them up, the movie devolves into a tedious exercise in style over substance. Ultimately, the grand scale cannot compensate for weak writing, turning what should have been an epic cinematic event into a painful test of endurance.
