A fresh controversy has erupted in Bollywood after actor Ranvir Shorey strongly criticized fellow actor Swara Bhasker for her recent statements regarding the dramatic Jauhar climax sequence in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 hit film Padmaavat. The debate reignited after Swara spoke at the Woman, Life, Freedom talk at the India International Centre in Delhi, where she recalled her famous open letter to the director and questioned the moral message sent by depicting historical self-immolation on screen. Swara argued that portraying Jauhar as the ultimate sacrifice to protect female honor could make sexual assault survivors feel invalidated, questioning whether such cinematic representations imply that a woman’s life loses value following trauma. Her comments quickly drew sharp opposition online from film enthusiasts and industry professionals who defended the historical context of the film.
Taking to his social media handle, Ranvir Shorey lashed out at Swara’s interpretation of the scene, labeling her comments as utterly shameless. Shorey expressed confusion over the comparison, stating that historical Jauhar performed in defiance of enemy invasion and captivity cannot be equated to the experiences of modern-day assault survivors, as they belong to entirely different realities. He further alleged that drawing such parallels appeared to be an attempt to malign one group while attempting to whitewash another. Following the viral discourse, Padmaavat co-writer Prakash Kapadia also defended the sequence, maintaining that the depiction reflected historical realities of the era rather than a modern societal message.
