Taapsee Pannu says makers blame audience for objectification of women in films: ‘They feel janta maang rahi hai’

Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu, known for playing fearless and powerful roles, has spoken openly about the ongoing debate regarding the over-sexualization and objectification of women in Indian cinema. In a recent interview while promoting her film Gandhari, the actress reacted to the online backlash surrounding female portrayals in recent big-budget mass entertainers like Peddi and Toxic. Addressing the issue, Taapsee explained that filmmakers and producers often justify these problematic portrayals by passing the buck onto moviegoers, operating under the assumption that “janta maang rahi hai” or the public is demanding such content to drive box office returns. She pointed out that whenever commercial films prioritize quick profit over artistic integrity, craft and meaningful storytelling take a backseat, causing the Indian film industry to regress rather than progress toward better cinema.
Elaborating on the disconnect between social media criticism and ground realities, Taapsee noted that online outrage does not always influence the box office success of mass genre films. She highlighted how, despite intense online noise calling out weird camera angles and objectification, there remains a massive parallel audience on social media platforms actively circulating and making such zoomed-in clips viral. Calling it a classic cycle of demand and supply, the Dunki star admitted that actors alone cannot change this reality unless audiences actively stop consuming such content. She stressed that when filmmakers argue they are simply giving viewers what they want, actors have no solid counter-argument, making it a battle that can only be won when the audience chooses to support better female representation on screen.
