National Award-winning filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia recently shared his candid views on the current state of mainstream Hindi cinema, sparking a widespread debate across the film industry and social media platforms. Speaking at an event organized by The Wire on “The State of Media and Film Industry,” the acclaimed director behind hits like Paan Singh Tomar and Haasil directly criticized the Ranveer Singh-starrer blockbuster Dhurandhar, claiming that the film suffers from a complete absence of a meaningful storyline.

While acknowledging that he enjoyed the overall presentation, high-energy music, and slick execution of the Aditya Dhar directorial, Dhulia pointed out that the basic plot lacks deep substance. He noted that if anyone asks a viewer to summarize the narrative, it simply reduces to an undercover Indian spy going to Pakistan and causing chaos, which in his view does not constitute a real story.

Expanding on his critique, Tigmanshu Dhulia linked this shift in filmmaking to the rise of corporate culture and extreme capitalism in the movie industry. He argued that major studios and decision-makers are now driven purely by numerical box-office targets rather than a genuine passion for narrative arts.

According to the director, this financial-first mindset forces creators into rigid commercial templates, pushing out writers and filmmakers who wish to offer original, authentic perspectives. He compared the current trend of blockbusters like Dhurandhar, Pushpa, and KGF to formulaic fictional biopics, stating that extreme commercialization is homogenizing cinema just as modern development is stripping away the unique identity of historic Indian cities.

The director’s outspoken remarks have drawn mixed reactions from moviegoers and industry observers online. While several cinema enthusiasts agreed with his commentary regarding repetitive plotlines and formulaic action films, many fans of the multi-crore action franchise dismissed his critique on social media, labeling it as sour grapes over the immense commercial success of the film. Despite the pushback, Dhulia remains firm on his stance, emphasizing that Hindi cinema needs to step away from corporate templates and return to rich, content-driven storytelling.
