The highly anticipated crime thriller Haiwaan starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan has made a modest entry at the box office on its opening day. Directed by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan, the movie marks the high-profile reunion of the two lead actors on screen after seventeen years, having last shared space in the action film Tashan back in 2008.
Despite bringing back a iconic nineties duo alongside a director renowned for delivering major theatrical hits, the film has witnessed a relatively quiet response at the ticket windows across the globe.
According to trade analysts and box office trackers, the movie recorded an estimated domestic net collection of 3 crore rupees on its first day, coming from over seven thousand shows scheduled across India.
The domestic gross collection stood at approximately 3.60 crore rupees, while the film managed to pull in around 1 crore rupees from the overseas market. Combining the domestic and international receipts, the total worldwide opening day gross for the thriller stands at 4.60 crore rupees.
This opening figure marks one of the slower starts for a high-budget star-led project this year, putting the film under immediate pressure to show growth.
Trade experts point out that the slow start is partly due to intense holdover competition at the domestic box office, where existing releases continue to draw significant footfalls. Additionally, the movie strays away from the classic slapstick comedy format usually associated with Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar collaborations, opting instead for a gritty suspense narrative adapted from the Malayalam hit Oppam.
The upcoming weekend will be crucial for the project to build momentum, as positive word of mouth from theatergoers could potentially boost turnout and help the movie recover its ground over the coming days.
