The upcoming 72nd National Film Awards ceremony is set to mark a landmark shift in Indian cinema history. Departing from the decades-long custom of hosting the prestigious event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) officially announced that this edition will take place at Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, in Gujarat.

Scheduled for September 22, 2026, the grand ceremony will see President Droupadi Murmu presenting awards to the country’s finest cinematic talents near the iconic Statue of Unity.

This move is being recognized as one of the rare instances where the event has moved outside the national capital, bringing nationwide attention to regional cultural hubs.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting revealed that hosting the ceremony in Gujarat is part of a deliberate, broader policy shift aimed at decentralizing national cultural celebrations.

The ministry stated that moving the National Film Awards beyond the capital will become a regular effort to celebrate cinema across various states and cities in India. According to officials, holding the event at Ekta Nagar reflects the core theme of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat, aiming to unite artists, filmmakers, and audiences from different linguistic and regional backgrounds under a collective national stage.
