The Delhi High Court recently questioned the makers of the movie Mirzapur regarding the placement of the song Shoorveer in their film. The controversy began after a petition was filed in court objecting to how the track, originally composed as an ode to the bravery and legacy of the legendary warrior Maharana Pratap, was featured in the project.
A bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia was hearing the Public Interest Litigation that sought the removal or replacement of the background track from specific scenes in the movie.
During the court proceedings, the bench directed the counsel representing Excel Entertainment to watch the film and return to present their position. The judges specifically questioned whether the lawyer was personally satisfied with using a song celebrating Maharana Pratap in the context of scenes centered around fictional criminal elements, gang conflicts, and violence.
The petitioner argued that using a reverential track linked to a respected historical icon alongside anti-social themes distorts cultural heritage and hurts public sentiment.
The court also reflected on the broader balance between protecting artistic freedom and addressing public grievances regarding cultural figures. While acknowledging that courts generally avoid interfering with certified artistic works, the bench asked the producers to evaluate the issue carefully before the matter is heard again.
The petitioner has requested legal directives to establish clear guidelines preventing historical tributes from being used inappropriately in fictional entertainment.
