Legendary Hindi cinema lyricist Sameer Anjaan recently shared his candid perspectives on why superstar vocalist Arijit Singh chose to step away from playback singing. Appearing on trade analyst Komal Nahta’s podcast, Game Changers: The Music Series, the Guinness World Record-holding wordsmith pinpointed a severe lack of variety and rising creative fatigue within the current music ecosystem as primary catalysts.
Anjaan explained that the film music sector has slumped into a repetitive rut where tracks constantly echo one another. According to him, Arijit Singh reached a threshold of exhaustion because the industry continually pushed him into a singular vocal template instead of challenging him with fresh, diverse compositions.
Reflecting on the shift across eras, Anjaan highlighted how previous decades celebrated distinctive musical diversity with legendary voices like Udit Narayan, whereas present-day Hindi cinema severely lacks creative range.
He noted that modern producers and composers tailored almost every composition to fit a rigid style, prompting subsequent artists to merely copy that uniform pattern. Sensing that remaining in this environment would inevitably lead to artistic stagnation, Arijit made the conscious decision to pull back.
The renowned lyricist emphasized that any sensible musician would eventually walk away from an ecosystem that prioritizes volume and formulaic tracks over genuine melody, poetic writing, and original expression.
Beyond his comments on Arijit’s departure, Sameer Anjaan also voiced sharp criticism regarding how modern cinema handles iconic music, pointing to recent trends of remaking classic tracks and using them out of context during violent film scenes.
He expressed concern over big production banners sidelining veteran talent under the false assumption that experienced writers cannot connect with younger audiences. Instead of discarding traditional poetic depth for quick trends, he advocated for a collaborative space where veteran wisdom meets fresh energy, insisting that meaningful, soulful music will always outlast short-lived formulaic hits.
