The unpredictable and often challenging journey of breaking into the Indian film industry has always relied on relentless persistence, but for young film school graduate Shivam Shankar, a moment of pure vulnerability and frustration completely changed his professional life. While navigating the struggles of pitching ideas and trying to find a stable foothold in Mumbai, the aspiring filmmaker reached a point of deep professional low after facing multiple roadblocks in getting his creative projects off the ground. Operating out of the country’s financial capital while attempting to pursue parallel and artistic cinema comes with immense financial and emotional pressures, leaving many young talents searching for a breakthrough. Driven by a mix of exhaustion and raw impulse late one night, he decided to type out an exceptionally long message detailing his passion, struggles, and aspirations, and hit send directly to acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s official Instagram inbox.
To his absolute surprise, the acclaimed director—known for mentoring fresh talent and supporting independent voices in Hindi cinema—actually took the time to read the heartfelt message and responded with encouraging words. The veteran filmmaker invited him to join his team whenever he was ready in Mumbai, marking the life-changing turning point that kickstarted his career behind the scenes. Reflecting on that pivotal DM, the young director noted how accessibility through digital platforms has occasionally bridged the massive gap between industry veterans and newcomers trying to break through the traditional gatekeeping of Bollywood. Having since utilized that invaluable hands-on experience to helm acclaimed independent works like the short film Bhed Bakri Bhoot, which explores unique socio-cultural dynamics inside a public washroom, the budding creator continues to balance his artistic ambitions with the gritty realities of commercial survival, proving that sometimes a single honest message can alter the course of an entire career.
