In a truly pioneering move that bridges musical traditions across the globe, Saregama India Ltd has partnered with Juju Productions to unveil ‘Symphony Masala’. This is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind collection that dramatically reinterprets and presents iconic Bollywood classic songs, arranging them specifically for a full Western symphonic orchestra.

The collection, which features nine classic Bollywood hits spanning the last seven decades, aims to introduce these timeless tunes to a global audience in a format that is universally accessible. The video series will make its debut on Saregama’s official channel, beginning December 14.

The musical endeavor is fronted by the acclaimed vocalist Anuradha “Juju” Palakurthi, known for her versatility across languages and genres. She is joined by vocalist Mithilesh Patankar and the world-class Budapest Scoring Orchestra, expertly guided by conductor Peter Illenyi.

The task of transforming these classics fell to a multi-continental team of arrangers, including talents like D J Sparr, Neville Franco, Kamlesh Bhadkamkar, Ishaan Chhabra, Bala G, and Bappa Lahiri. Their meticulous work was mixed and mastered by Vijay Dayal.

The central innovation of Symphony Masala lies in its complete avoidance of traditional Indian instruments. This means the arrangements feature no sitars, no tablas, and no harmoniums. Instead, the iconic melodies are carried entirely by Western orchestral instruments—the strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion typically found in a symphony hall.

Indian music traditions, often rooted in oral history and spontaneous improvisation, contrast sharply with the precisely noted, formal structures of Western classical music. By translating these complex, nuanced Indian melodies (like those found in a specific raga or musical scale) into detailed Western musical scores, the project creates a “universal blueprint.” This allows any musician or orchestra worldwide—from professional groups to school ensembles—to accurately perform these beloved Bollywood songs, regardless of their prior familiarity with the Indian musical style.

As stated by Anuradha “Juju” Palakurthi, the project was conceived to “bring Indian melody into Western concert halls through a format that is accessible, portable, and rooted in deep musical respect.”

Symphony Masala is more than just a musical arrangement; it’s a monumental step in cross-cultural artistic exchange. It respectfully preserves the soul and depth of the original compositions while giving them an entirely new, epic voice through the power of the symphony orchestra.
