Shreyas Talpade and Alok Nath were named in the complaint filed by a resident of Sonipat, who alleged that the actors promoted the society as brand ambassadors, which is what ultimately encouraged and lured many people to invest their savings.
The complaint suggests that the actors’ fame and public credibility were leveraged to promote a seemingly secure financial institution. When the schemes allegedly failed and payments stopped, the actors were included in the list of the accused. In court, the lawyers representing the actors presented a strong defence.
Shreyas Talpade’s counsel argued that the actor was merely an invited celebrity guest for an annual event organised by the society and had no knowledge of its internal financial operations. His lawyer explicitly stated that Talpade “never earned any money” in a way that suggests involvement in the alleged fraud.
Alok Nath’s counsel submitted that the actor had not attended any functions and his photograph was used by the society from as far back as 10 years ago.
