In a move that has sparked significant conversation across the Indian film industry, acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar has come out in strong support of the latest box office sensation, Dhurandhar. As the Ranveer Singh-starrer continues its record-breaking spree, amassing over ₹1,300 crore worldwide, Johar shared that he was deeply impressed by the film’s craft, despite the political debates surrounding it.

The spy thriller, directed by Aditya Dhar, has been a subject of intense discussion since its release. While the movie has shattered numerous box office records, it has also faced criticism from some sections of the audience and critics who found its political undertones divisive. Actor Hrithik Roshan was among those who expressed admiration for the filmmaking but noted he couldn’t align with its political stance.

“Unabashedly and Unapologetically Loved It”
Speaking at a recent event organized by the youth organization India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN), Johar addressed the controversy head-on.

“I unabashedly, unapologetically, and absolutely, outstandingly loved ‘Dhurandhar’. I saw all of it with awe because I loved the craft of the filmmaker,” Johar stated.

The director of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani emphasized that his appreciation for the film stemmed from its storytelling and technical brilliance. He praised the way the narrative was divided into chapters and described the director’s “gaze” as internal and nuanced.

When asked about the ideological issues raised by others, Johar remained firm in his stance. He noted that while he respects the opinions of colleagues like Hrithik Roshan, he personally did not find the film offensive.

“I actually wasn’t offended by the politics of the film. I know where it was heading,” Johar explained. “I know some people could agree or disagree, and that should be cinema. I watched it for the craft, for the cinema aspect of it, and I absolutely loved it.”

Dhurandhar made him reflect on his own journey as a creator. He admitted that the film’s unique voice and scale made him question his own abilities, though he concluded that such a specific style of filmmaking—while masterful—might not be his personal “cup of tea.”

The success of Dhurandhar is nothing short of historic. Having surpassed the worldwide collections of major blockbusters like RRR and KGF: Chapter 2, it has now become one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.

As the film enters its seventh week, it shows no signs of slowing down, even with major upcoming releases on the horizon. For the industry, Johar’s vocal support serves as a reminder that cinematic excellence can often transcend ideological differences. To know such latest updates tuned to tellyboosters.com Thank you!
