Aamir Khan Opens Up on Dream Project ‘Mahabharat’: “It’s a Huge Responsibility to Get it Right”

For years, rumors have swirled around Bollywood’s “Mr. Perfectionist,” Aamir Khan, and his long-held desire to bring the ancient Indian epic Mahabharat to the silver screen. In a recent series of candid interviews, the superstar has finally opened up about the immense emotional and creative weight he carries regarding the project, describing it not just as a film, but as a “yagna”—a sacred ritual.

Aamir revealed that he has been “making Mahabharat in his mind” for nearly 30 years. While fans have been eager for an official announcement, the actor explained that the delay stems from a deep-seated fear of doing a “bad job” with a story that is foundational to Indian identity.

“It’s my dream project, and it’s a very scary project,” Khan admitted. “It is a huge responsibility because, as Indians, it’s something so close to us; it’s in our blood. I want to make sure that if I ever make this film, I make it in such a way that every Indian feels proud.”

Acknowledging that the vastness of the epic cannot be contained in a single movie, Aamir shared a vision inspired by global franchises like The Lord of the Rings. He suggested that the project would likely be a series of multiple films, potentially shot back-to-back with a team of different directors to handle the massive timeline and scale.

Aamir has hinted at preferring “unknown faces,” believing the legendary characters are the true stars and shouldn’t be overshadowed by established celebrity personas.

Perhaps most surprising was Aamir’s reflection on his future in cinema. He suggested that Mahabharat is so all-encompassing that it might be the final chapter of his acting career.

“Everything that exists in the world can be found in Mahabharat,” he noted. “I feel like once I’ve done it, there might be a feeling that there’s nothing more I can do after that. The material is so layered and emotional that it might leave me completely satisfied as an artist.”

While he clarified he isn’t retiring immediately—with his film Sitaare Zameen Par slated for release in mid-2025—the actor emphasized that he is taking his time with the epic. He believes that while humans can let the Mahabharat down by not doing it justice, the story itself will never let the audience down.

Aamir expects the formal writing process to intensify following his current commitments. For now, the actor remains in a “preparation phase,” ensuring that when the first clapboard finally sounds, it marks the beginning of a production that lives up to the expectations of a billion people.
