FIR Filed Against Bollywood Actor Ranveer Singh Over ‘Kantara’ Mimicry Controversy

Bollywood star Ranveer Singh, known for his high-energy performances and often eccentric public persona, has found himself in legal hot water. An First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the actor following a recent public appearance where he allegedly mimicked the iconic Daiva (divine spirit) sequence from the blockbuster Kannada film Kantara.

The complaint, filed by a cultural organization dedicated to the preservation of coastal Karnataka’s traditions, alleges that Singh’s “caricatured” portrayal of the sacred ritual has hurt the religious sentiments of the community.

The controversy stems from a recent promotional event where Ranveer Singh was seen attempting the signature “Guliga” or “Panjurli” roar and dance movements made famous by Rishab Shetty in the 2022 film Kantara. While the actor likely intended it as a tribute to the film’s success, local practitioners and devotees of the Bhoota Kola tradition did not see it that way.

According to the complainants, the Daiva is not a fictional character but a revered deity. They argue that performing the ritualistic movements in a casual or comedic setting—especially for commercial entertainment—is a “mockery of a living faith.”

The FIR was lodged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly the IPC) relating to Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. Insulting the religious beliefs of a class of citizens.

“These rituals are performed with months of preparation, purity, and strict discipline,” said a spokesperson for the group. “Seeing it reduced to a 30-second ‘act’ for a brand launch or a red carpet event is deeply offensive to those who consider the Daiva their protector.”

This isn’t the first time Kantara’s cultural elements have sparked debate. Director and actor Rishab Shetty has previously requested fans and fellow actors to treat the Bhoota Kola elements with “utmost sanctity,” noting that it is a sensitive spiritual practice rather than just a “cool cinematic visual.”

While some fans argue that Ranveer Singh’s actions were born out of admiration for the film, critics suggest that Bollywood often fails to understand the deep-rooted cultural nuances of South Indian traditions before adopting them for “viral moments.”

As of now, Ranveer Singh’s legal team has not issued an official statement. Sources close to the actor suggest that he had no intention of causing offense and was simply expressing his love for the movie. However, the police have initiated an investigation and may summon the actor for a statement in the coming weeks.

This incident adds to the growing list of controversies surrounding Bollywood celebrities and the “cancel culture” that arises from perceived cultural insensitivity. Whether this will lead to a formal apology or a long-drawn legal battle remains to be seen. To know such latest updates tuned to tellyboosters.com Thank you!
