Box Office Bloodbath? Sanjay Gupta Warns “Dhurandhar 2” and “Toxic” Will “Eat Each Other’s Business”

The Indian film industry is bracing for what many are calling the “clash of the titans.” On March 19, 2026, two of the year’s most anticipated films—Ranveer Singh’s spy thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Yash’s gangster epic Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups—are set to collide at the box office.

While fans are busy picking sides, veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has issued a sobering reality check. Drawing from his own scars in the industry, Gupta warned that this head-to-head battle will likely result in both films “eating into each other’s business.”

The “Kaabil vs. Raees” Lesson
Gupta, who famously saw his film Kaabil clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees in 2017, didn’t mince words during a recent interview with Variety India. He noted that while both movies are “highly awaited,” the overlap is ultimately “unfortunate” for the bottom line.

“We have to take into account that we are not a super-rich country,” Gupta remarked. “Our people don’t have money flowing that they can just go and watch two films back-to-back. There are many people who can’t watch two films in one month.”

His argument is simple: the audience’s wallet is finite. By releasing on the same day, both films are essentially fighting for the same ₹500 note in a viewer’s pocket. Gupta believes that while both will likely “do well,” neither will be able to reach its full individual potential or set the record-breaking numbers they might have achieved with a solo release.

A Tale of Two Sensibilities
The clash isn’t just about money; it’s about a massive divide in cinematic style.
Dhurandhar 2: Directed by Aditya Dhar, this sequel is being hailed as a “phenomenon.” It leans into realistic, high-stakes espionage, following Ranveer Singh’s character, Hamza, as he infiltrates a criminal syndicate.

Toxic: Directed by Geetu Mohandas, this marks Yash’s grand return after the KGF era. It is described as a dark, stylized “fairytale,” blending gritty action with a massive pan-India ensemble including Nayanthara and Kiara Advani.

Industry maverick Ram Gopal Varma recently added fuel to the fire, claiming the clash represents a battle between “intelligence” and “mass appeal,” further polarizing an already divided fanbase.

The Screen Crunch
Beyond audience spending, the physical logistics of the release are a nightmare for distributors. With roughly 10,000 screens across India, a solo release of this magnitude would typically command 6,000+ screens. In a clash, both films will be forced to split the pie, likely landing 4,500 to 5,000 screens each.

Trade analysts suggest that even with the holiday boost of Eid, Ugadi, and Gudi Padwa, the concentrated national attention might actually dilute the long-term “word-of-mouth” potential that sustains a blockbuster’s run.

Will Someone Move?
Despite the warnings, neither camp seems ready to blink. The makers of Toxic recently dropped a fierce teaser, doubling down on the March 19 date. Meanwhile, Dhurandhar 2 is riding the momentum of its predecessor’s ₹1,300 crore success.

As it stands, March 19 will be a historic day for Indian cinema—but as Sanjay Gupta suggests, it might be a day where “success” comes at a very high cost. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
