The corridors of Bollywood are buzzing with nostalgia as the 1980 action-comedy classic, Do Aur Do Paanch, is officially back in the spotlight. Producer Deepak Mukut, head of Soham Rockstar Entertainment, has formally asserted his exclusive ownership of the film’s remake, sequel, and derivative rights, putting an end to industry speculation regarding the property.
In a recent reveal that has sent fans of the “buddy-cop” genre into a frenzy, Mukut shared that he has long envisioned a modern reimagining of the film. Specifically, he disclosed a decade-long wish to see Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol step into the iconic shoes originally worn by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor.
Protecting the Legacy
The announcement follows a series of public notices issued by the production house to clarify legal standing. This move was prompted by rumors suggesting that other major franchises might be drawing “inspiration” from the 1980 hit, which followed two rival burglars who unknowingly infiltrate a school as teachers to kidnap the same child.
“I had to issue a public notice to prevent anyone else from remaking it,” Mukut stated. “I am very serious about doing the film. For nearly ten years, I have wanted to remake it with Bobby Deol and Abhishek Bachchan.”
The Perfect Pairing?
The choice of Abhishek and Bobby feels like a natural fit for the chaotic, competitive chemistry required for the roles of Vijay (Ram) and Sunil (Lakshman). The two actors have previously shared the screen in films like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Players, showcasing a comfort level that mirrors the Shashi-Amitabh camaraderie of the late 70s.
While the original film underperformed at the box office during its initial release, it has since attained cult status for its witty dialogue—penned by the legendary Kader Khan—and its hilarious “frenemy” dynamic.
Current Status: Scripting the Future
As of February 2026, the project is officially in the scripting stage. Mukut clarified that he is still exploring the best creative route for the story, weighing whether a faithful remake or a contemporary sequel would better serve today’s audience.
“I haven’t decided yet whether the movie will be a direct remake, a sequel, or simply a film inspired by the original,” the producer added. “But the rights are secure, and we are working to bring that same energy back to the big screen.”
With Bobby Deol currently enjoying a massive career resurgence and Abhishek Bachchan consistently picking high-concept roles, a collaboration on this classic caper could be the high-octane comedy Bollywood needs. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
