“I Cannot Disown It”: Shreya Ghoshal Responds to Trolls Over ‘Chikni Chameli’ Controversy

National Award-winning singer Shreya Ghoshal has finally addressed the social media storm surrounding her iconic hit “Chikni Chameli.” After facing backlash for her evolving stance on “raunchy” songs, the melody queen clarified that while she is now more selective about her work, she is not embarrassed by her past hits.
The conversation began when Ghoshal’s earlier comments about being “embarrassed” when young children sing suggestive lyrics went viral.

Critics on social media were quick to point out the perceived hypocrisy of the singer still performing the track at live concerts.
“I Won’t Record Such Songs Again”
Speaking on a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Ghoshal addressed the trolling directly. She explained that her perspective has shifted as she has matured in the industry.

“I’m not embarrassed. I sang that song at that time,” Ghoshal stated firmly. “It’s one song I will always have to live with. Sometimes I close my eyes when children in the audience dance to it, but I cannot disown it. It’s my song; I’ve owned it.”

However, she made it clear that her future discography will look different. The singer revealed that since the massive success of the Agneepath track, she has been offered numerous songs with “overtly objectifying” lyrics—all of which she has turned down.

The Maturity Factor
Reflecting on the 2012 recording session, Ghoshal admitted that she didn’t fully grasp the weight of the lyrics at the time. “At that time, I didn’t always understand what I was singing. I wasn’t mature enough to fully grasp the meaning of certain lines,” she shared.

She noted that while “Chikni Chameli” is a “good song” with significant “artistry,” she now feels a responsibility toward her younger fans. Unlike films, which come with age ratings, songs are accessible to everyone.

“Films have certificates. But songs don’t. Children can listen to anything. If I sing something today and it becomes a hit, I will have to perform it everywhere. I’ve become conscious of that now.”

Drawing the Line
Ghoshal also touched upon the “fine line” between being sensuous and being objectified. She expressed a desire for lyrics to be written with more “grace,” suggesting that a female perspective in songwriting could change how such tracks are crafted.

The singer recalled a specific instance where a composer friend offered her a song with lyrics so graphic they made her “blush” with discomfort. “I folded my hands and walked away,” she said, emphasizing that she is no longer willing to compromise her comfort for a hit.
