In a significant development regarding the ongoing legal dispute over his mimicry of a sacred ritual, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has informed the Karnataka High Court that he is prepared to submit an affidavit tendering an unconditional apology. The actor also expressed his commitment to visit the Chamundi Temple in Mysuru to seek forgiveness and demonstrate genuine remorse.
The Controversy at a Glance
The legal trouble for the Dhurandhar star stems from an incident at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa last year. During a public interaction with Kantara filmmaker Rishab Shetty, Singh reportedly mimicked the iconic “Daiva” sequence from the film.
Critics and legal complainants argued that Singh’s portrayal was insensitive, particularly as he reportedly referred to the revered Chamundi Daiva as a “female ghost” or “demon.” These remarks led to an FIR being registered against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and mocking the sacred Bhoota Kola tradition of coastal Karnataka.
Court Proceedings and Judicial Remarks
During the hearing on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, a single-judge bench led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna observed that the actor’s actions were “not correct” and emphasized the social responsibility held by public figures.
“What he has done is not right. It is a mistake that has happened. Actors wield significant influence and must be responsible with their words,” the Court remarked orally.
The complainant’s counsel, Advocate C.G. Malayali, had previously argued that Singh’s earlier apologies on social media were “insincere” and likely drafted by his management team rather than being a heartfelt expression of regret.
A Path Toward Atonement
In response to the court’s observations and the complainant’s demands for a more personal gesture, Singh’s legal representative, Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, assured the bench that:
An affidavit of unconditional apology will be formally placed on record.
The actor will personally visit Chamundi Hill in Mysuru to offer prayers and apologize at the temple.
The court has noted these submissions and scheduled the next hearing for April 10, 2026. If the affidavit is deemed satisfactory and the temple visit is concluded, the court may consider closing the proceedings and quashing the FIR against the actor. To
