The wait for one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious historical projects is over. Actor-director Riteish Deshmukh officially released the first-look teaser of his upcoming magnum opus, Raja Shivaji, on Tuesday, sending waves of excitement through fans and the film industry alike.
The teaser, which premiered online after a theatrical preview alongside Dhurandhar: The Revenge, showcases a gritty and emotionally charged portrayal of the Maratha Empire’s founder. With a budget estimated at ₹100 crore, the film is being positioned as a pan-India spectacle, produced by Jio Studios and Genelia Deshmukh’s Mumbai Film Company.
A Glimpse into the Rebellion
The teaser opens with a heavy, atmospheric voiceover by Sanjay Dutt, who plays the antagonist (Afzal Khan), questioning if the Maratha destiny is “death or slavery.” The visuals transition into high-intensity sequences featuring Riteish Deshmukh as a young Shivaji, emphasizing the ideology of “Swarajya” (self-rule).
Riteish, who has also written the film, seems to have traded his signature comedic timing for a grounded, fierce intensity. Speaking on the project, Deshmukh stated, “Portraying Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a role; it is a responsibility toward our roots and our history.”
A Power-Packed Ensemble
Beyond the lead, the teaser offers brief, impactful glimpses of a massive star cast:
Abhishek Bachchan appears as Sambhaji Shahaji Bhosale.
Sanjay Dutt takes on the role of the primary antagonist.
Genelia Deshmukh portrays Rani Saibai.
The cast also includes veterans like Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, and Fardeen Khan.
Salman Khan is reported to make a special appearance as Jiva Mahala.
Technical Mastery
The film’s scale is backed by a world-class technical crew. Celebrated cinematographer Santosh Sivan captures the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats, while the musical duo Ajay-Atul provides a thunderous background score that heightens the teaser’s emotional stakes.
Filmed extensively in locations like Wai, Mahabaleshwar, and Satara, the production aimed for historical authenticity, recreating 16th-century Maharashtra with meticulously designed sets and costumes.
Release Schedule
Raja Shivaji is scheduled for a grand global release on May 1, 2026, coinciding with Maharashtra Day. To ensure a massive reach, the film was shot simultaneously in Marathi and Hindi and will be dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
As the “Har Har Mahadev” chants echo through the final frames of the teaser, it is clear that Riteish Deshmukh is ready to deliver a cinematic tribute that aims to transcend regional boundaries and celebrate a national icon. To
