The wait for one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious projects ended today as the makers of Ramayana officially unveiled the first teaser, titled “Rama.” Released on the auspicious occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, the two-minute-and-38-second glimpse provides a high-octane look at Ranbir Kapoor in the titular role of Lord Rama, setting the stage for what is being billed as a cinematic epic of unprecedented scale.

A Vision Seven Years in the Making
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari (Dangal, Chhichhore) and produced by Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus and DNEG, the film is the culmination of a seven-year development journey. At a grand launch event in Mumbai, an emotional Tiwari shared that the process had been “lonely and speculative,” but seeing the audience’s initial reaction made every year of hard work worth it.

The teaser focuses primarily on the character arc of Rama, moving from his regal life in Ayodhya to the rugged landscapes of his exile. Ranbir Kapoor is seen in a striking new avatar, donning royal robes and heavy gold jewelry, while also appearing as a disciplined warrior.

“I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him,” Kapoor stated during a Q&A session. He noted that the character’s “purity and simplicity” were qualities he sought to understand deeply throughout the filming process.

Global Ambitions and Technical Prowess
The production has spared no expense, enlisting the help of Oscar-winning VFX house DNEG (known for Dune and Interstellar) to create the mythical world of the Treta Yuga. The teaser showcases expansive palaces, dense forests, and grand battle sequences designed specifically for the IMAX format.

Adding to the film’s international appeal is the historic musical collaboration between Indian maestro A.R. Rahman and Hollywood legendary composer Hans Zimmer. The teaser’s score, which blends traditional Indian sounds with a grand orchestral sweep, has already become a talking point among fans.

Mixed Reactions and High Expectations
As with any major adaptation of the Ramayana, the teaser has sparked intense debate online. While many fans were moved by a specific sequence showing Rama turning slowly in a boat as his name is called, others have expressed concerns over the heavy use of CGI, with some social media users describing certain shots as looking “too polished” or “AI-generated.”

Despite the mixed digital reception, the industry remains optimistic. The film features a star-studded ensemble, including Sai Pallavi as Sita and Kannada superstar Yash as Ravana. While Yash’s full look was kept largely in the shadows during this teaser, glimpses of his kingdom and the sheer scale of the conflict to come have kept anticipation high.

With Hollywood stunt coordinators Terry Notary and Guy Norris handling the action choreography, Ramayana is positioning itself not just as a religious epic, but as a global action-adventure that seeks to redefine the capabilities of Indian cinema on the world stage. To know such
