In the high-stakes world of Bollywood casting, what looks like a missed opportunity for one actor often becomes a career-defining milestone for another. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra recently pulled back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes drama of Aditya Dhar’s latest blockbuster, Dhurandhar, revealing that the role of the villainous Rehman Dakait was rejected by three major stars before Akshaye Khanna eventually claimed it.
The film, which features an explosive ensemble including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, has been a massive box-office juggernaut. However, Chhabra admits that assembling this “dream team” was far from easy, especially when it came to the role that Khanna has now made his own.
The Fear of the Ensemble
During a candid discussion about the film’s success, Chhabra expressed his frustration with the “insecure” mindset of many modern actors. He revealed that he approached two big names from Bollywood and one superstar from the South for the role of the antagonist. All three declined.
The reasons for their refusal, according to Chhabra, were surprisingly similar:
Screen-Time Anxiety: The actors were worried that with so many big names on the poster, their individual impact would be diluted.
The “Lead” Complex: Many felt the project was strictly a “Ranveer Singh film” and didn’t want to play second fiddle.
Ensemble Hesitation: There was a general fear of being “lost in the crowd” of a multi-starrer.
“It felt weird to hear their logic,” Chhabra remarked. “They were focusing on the number of stars instead of the strength of the character. I felt bad at the time because we had chosen them with so much heart, but they just couldn’t see the vision.”
The “Akshaye Khanna” Difference
When the search hit a wall, the team turned to Akshaye Khanna. Known for being reclusive and extremely picky about his projects, many expected another long negotiation or a polite “no.” The reality was the exact opposite.
“Akshaye is a pure artist. He doesn’t care about the commerce or who else is in the frame. He heard the narration, loved the meat of the character, and said ‘yes’ within 24 hours,” Chhabra shared.
Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait has since become the talk of the industry, with many calling it his most chilling performance to date. His ability to command the screen, even alongside a powerhouse like Ranveer Singh, has proven that character depth always trumps screen duration.
A ₹1300 Crore Lesson
With Dhurandhar shattering records and crossing the ₹1300 crore mark globally, the actors who turned it down are likely feeling the sting of a missed opportunity. Chhabra noted that the film’s success should serve as a wake-up call for the industry.
“I hope those three actors are watching the film now,” Chhabra said with a hint of wit. “They would see that in a well-written script, no one gets lost. Akshaye didn’t worry about being ‘overshadowed,’ and today, he is the one everyone is talking about.”
The story of Dhurandhar’s casting remains a classic example of how a “reject” for one can become a “masterpiece” for another—provided they have the vision to see past the billing order. To know such
