Nearly a year after its emotional and successful journey in cinema halls, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s sports drama Sitaare Zameen Par is finally moving to a major streaming platform. Sony LIV officially announced on Monday that it has secured the digital rights for the film, marking a significant milestone as the first Hindi theatrical blockbuster to debut on the service under its new acquisition strategy.
A Groundbreaking Release Strategy
The journey of Sitaare Zameen Par to OTT has been anything but traditional. After its theatrical release on June 20, 2025, Aamir Khan surprised the industry by initially bypassing major streaming giants. Instead, he experimented with a “Pay-Per-View” (PPV) model on YouTube, which he called his “private cinema chain.”
During that phase, the actor-producer turned down massive offers from OTT platforms to prioritize a direct-to-audience digital release, allowing fans to rent the movie for ₹100. However, after nine months of this experimental run, the film is now transitioning to a subscription-based model to reach an even wider global audience.
The Heart of the Story
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is considered a spiritual successor to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. While the first film focused on dyslexia, this project shines a light on neurodiversity through the lens of sports.
The Plot: Aamir Khan stars as Gulshan Arora, a headstrong and cynical basketball coach who is suspended following a series of professional and personal outbursts.
The Transformation: As part of a court-mandated community service, Gulshan is tasked with training a team of ten neurodivergent players for a national championship.
The Twist: In a “flip” of the original film’s theme, Aamir’s character—the supposedly “normal” person—is the one who undergoes a profound transformation, learning about resilience, joy, and humanity from his team.
Critical and Commercial Success
The film emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi movies of 2025, earning over ₹250 crores at the box office. Critics praised the film for its sensitive portrayal of intellectual disabilities, specifically highlighting that the “Sitaare” (the stars) were played by ten specially-abled actors whose authentic performances stole the show.
Alongside Aamir Khan, the film stars Genelia Deshmukh in a lead role, marking her first on-screen collaboration with the superstar. The ensemble cast also features seasoned actors like Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
