In a significant legal development, Bollywood actor and comedian Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on Thursday afternoon. The surrender follows a firm directive from the Delhi High Court, which refused to grant the actor any further relief or extensions in a long-standing cheque bounce case involving several crores of rupees.

The Final Ultimatum
The surrender took place around 4:00 PM on February 5, 2026, after a bench led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma made it clear that “surrender was non-negotiable.” Despite a last-minute plea by Yadav’s legal team offering an immediate payment of ₹25 lakh to settle part of the dues, the court remained firm.

“You first surrender, then we will see,” Justice Sharma told the actor, emphasizing that legal compliance must come before any discussion of financial settlements. The court expressed strong disapproval of Yadav’s conduct, noting that he had repeatedly breached past undertakings and failed to honor multiple deadlines set for repayment.

Background: A Film Project Gone Wrong
The legal battle dates back to 2010, stemming from a loan of ₹5 crore taken from M/s Murli Projects Pvt Ltd. The funds were intended to finance Yadav’s directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. According to the complainant: Yadav had agreed to repay a total of ₹8 crore. The cheques issued for the repayment were subsequently dishonored.

In 2018, a magisterial court convicted Yadav and his wife, sentencing the actor to six months of simple imprisonment.

Timeline of Defaults
While the sentence had been suspended in June 2024 to allow for an amicable settlement through mediation, the court noted a consistent pattern of non-compliance..October 2025: Two demand drafts of ₹75 lakh were deposited, but approximately ₹9 crore (including interest/penalties) remained outstanding. December 2025: Yadav’s counsel assured the court of a ₹40 lakh payment, which was not fulfilled. February 4, 2026: The original deadline for surrender, which Yadav missed, citing attempts to arrange funds.

The court rejected justifications involving “typographical errors” in demand drafts, labeling such excuses as a lack of respect for the law.

Current Status
With the Delhi High Court refusing to “create special circumstances” for the actor based on his celebrity status, Yadav is now set to serve his six-month sentence. Jail authorities confirmed that he has been processed according to standard operating procedures.
While Yadav’s wife was also convicted, the court has previously shown leniency toward her, focusing the primary custodial requirement on the actor. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
