In a move that has sent ripples of excitement through the Indian cinephile community, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s 2009 masterpiece, Dev.D, is officially returning to the big screen. PVR INOX, in collaboration with Star Studio18, announced that the film will be re-released across select theaters nationwide on April 24, 2026.

The re-release marks 17 years since the film first shattered traditional Bollywood tropes and redefined the “modern classic.” Originally premiering in February 2009, Dev.D was a bold, neon-soaked departure from the sentimental adaptations of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas.

A Rebellion in Cinema
Reflecting on the film’s return, director Anurag Kashyap shared that the project was born out of a “place of rebellion.” Unlike previous cinematic versions that romanticized the protagonist’s self-destruction, Kashyap’s Dev (played by Abhay Deol) was intentionally portrayed as impulsive, entitled, and deeply flawed.

“I wanted to strip away the poetry and confront the contradictions—the very human mess beneath a character who had long been romanticized,” Kashyap stated in a recent press release. “This Dev isn’t a hero; his journey is reckless and painfully real.”

Empowered Characters and Unforgettable Music
The film is also celebrated for its subversive take on its female leads. Mahie Gill’s Paro was no longer the silent, pining lover but a woman with agency and anger. Similarly, Kalki Koechlin’s debut as Chanda reinvented the “fallen woman” trope into a story of survival and modern reinvention.

Kalki Koechlin expressed her excitement about the re-release, recalling the nerves of her first film:
“To see Dev.D return to the big screen feels crazy. It’s a film meant for that immersive experience—the landscapes, Amit Trivedi’s pulsating music, and the raw emotions hit differently in a dark theater shared with an audience.”

The Legacy of ‘Emosanal Attyachar’
A significant factor in the film’s cult status remains its soundtrack. Composed by Amit Trivedi, the music—ranging from the brassy chaos of “Emosanal Attyachar” to the haunting “Pardesi”—revolutionized the sound of Hindi cinema. Industry experts believe that experiencing Rajeev Ravi’s signature cinematography and the film’s experimental narrative on 4K digital projection will be a major draw for both old fans and the Gen-Z demographic who missed its original run.

Why Now?
The decision to bring back Dev.D aligns with a growing trend in Indian exhibition where “modern classics” are given a second life in theaters. Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, noted that they are constantly looking for “definitive titles that shifted the culture,” and Dev.D remains one of the most influential films of the 21st century.

Whether you are looking to relive the “emotional torture” or experience the neon-lit grit for the first time, Dev.D remains an essential watch for anyone trying to understand the evolution of contemporary Indian storytelling. To know
