In a surprising revelation that has piqued the interest of Bollywood enthusiasts, director Vinil Mathew recently shared that the beloved 2014 romantic comedy-drama, Hasee Toh Phasee, almost featured a completely different lead cast. Long before Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra became the faces of Nikhil and Meeta, several A-list stars were in the running for the roles.
The Initial Vision: Ranbir and Priyanka
Speaking about the film’s long journey to the big screen, Mathew disclosed that the script had passed through many hands. Initially, the makers had their sights set on the powerhouse duo of Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
The director mentioned that the casting process was a series of trials and transitions. “We had started with Ranbir and Priyanka,” Mathew revealed in a recent interview. While the pairing would have brought a different energy to the quirky rom-com, the collaboration ultimately did not materialize.
From Imran-Vidya to the Final Duo
The search for the perfect Meeta and Nikhil didn’t stop there. Mathew also approached Imran Khan and Vidya Balan for the lead roles. Given Imran Khan’s “boy-next-door” charm and Vidya Balan’s proven versatility, this combination was another strong contender.
Interestingly, the director noted that nearly every major actor in the industry at the time—including Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Emraan Hashmi—was considered or approached at some stage.
“Every Film Has Its Destiny”
Reflecting on the casting changes, Vinil Mathew remains philosophical. He believes that every project finds its rightful actors when the time is right. Despite the high-profile names initially considered, he expressed that the roles eventually found their perfect match in Sidharth and Parineeti.
“Every film has its destiny. For one reason or another, things didn’t work out with others, and it finally went to Sidharth and Parineeti. When it’s meant to happen, it happens,” Mathew remarked.
A Growing Legacy
Hasee Toh Phasee recently celebrated its 12th anniversary, and the film is set for a special re-release in theaters. While it received a modest response during its initial 2014 run, the movie has gained a massive cult following over the last decade.
Mathew recalled advice from producer Karan Johar, who told him after the initial release that every film has its own life and grows over time. Today, the chemistry between Malhotra and Chopra is considered one of the highlights of the film, making it hard for fans to imagine anyone else in those iconic roles.
