Farhan Akhtar Shifts Gears: ‘Jee Le Zaraa’ Back on Track as ‘Don 3’ Faces Casting Delays

In a move that has sent ripples through the Indian film industry, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has reportedly decided to pivot his focus. Following a series of casting hurdles and the reported exit of Ranveer Singh from the highly anticipated Don 3, Akhtar is moving forward with his long-delayed road-trip drama, Jee Le Zaraa.

For months, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on the third installment of the iconic Don franchise. However, recent reports suggest that the project has hit a significant standstill. Following the massive success of his latest film, Dhurandhar, Ranveer Singh—who was set to lead the new era of the franchise—has reportedly stepped away from the project.

This follows earlier departures by other key cast members, including Kiara Advani and Vikrant Massey. Sources close to Excel Entertainment suggest that Farhan Akhtar is unwilling to rush the casting of such a pivotal role. Rather than forcing a quick replacement, the director has opted to put Don 3 on the back burner to ensure the eventual film lives up to the legacy of its predecessors.

With Don 3 on hold, the doors have finally reopened for Jee Le Zaraa. First announced in 2021, the film was set to be a spiritual successor to Dil Chahta Hai and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, starring the powerhouse trio of Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt.

While the script has been locked for years, the project faced a “development hell” of sorts due to the Herculean task of aligning the schedules of three of Bollywood’s busiest A-listers.

“Jee Le Zaraa has always held a special place for Farhan,” a source revealed. “With Don 3 taking more time at the casting stage, he felt this was the perfect window to re-engage with the original team and get the cameras rolling.”

Current industry chatter suggests that Farhan has re-initiated talks with Priyanka, Katrina, and Alia. If the stars—and their calendars—finally align, production is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

While there have been occasional rumors of a “Gen Z” recast, recent updates indicate that Farhan is determined to stick with his original vision. For fans who have spent five years waiting for this female-led friendship saga, this shift in priority might be the best news of the year.
