A First Information Report (FIR) has reportedly been filed against acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli following controversial remarks he made about Lord Hanuman at the launch event for his upcoming film, Varanasi. The complaint accuses the director of hurting religious sentiments.
The incident occurred during the grand launch event for the film Varanasi, which is set to star Mahesh Babu. The event was plagued by technical glitches and leaks, leading to frustration among the team and the audience.
Addressing the technical issues, a visibly emotional Rajamouli shared his personal belief, stating, “I don’t believe in God.” He then spoke about his family members’ deep faith in Lord Hanuman.
Rajamouli mentioned his father’s belief that Lord Hanuman would protect and guide the event. He expressed anger and questioned, “Is this how He takes care?” in reference to the repeated technical failures. He also mentioned his wife’s devotion to the deity, stating he felt momentarily angry at her faith as well.
The director’s comments were quickly circulated online and drew immediate criticism from many people. Critics accused the filmmaker, whose successful movies like Baahubali and RRR draw heavily from Hindu mythology, of being a hypocrite or disrespectful to the faith he often uses as creative inspiration.
The formal complaint was filed by an organization named Rashtriya Vanara Sena at the Saroornagar Police Station.
The group alleged that Rajamouli’s remarks concerning Lord Hanuman at the Varanasi event were derogatory and caused significant offence to the religious feelings of Hindus. The complaint reportedly urged the police to take strict legal action against the director, setting a precedent against the “casual manner” in which Hindu deities are referenced in the film industry.
As of now, the police have registered the case, but it is unclear what specific sections of the law were invoked or whether any immediate action, such as an arrest, has been taken. The controversy continues to be a subject of heated debate on social media, pitting freedom of speech and expression against the protection of religious sentiments.
