Actress Sai Tamhankar has always been drawn to characters who are bold self-aware and unafraid to stand their ground. Her role as Barkha in the upcoming Matka King is a perfect reflection of that preference.
Barkha is not your typical on-screen spouse. She is independent confident and firmly rooted in her own identity. Talking about what made the role stand out Sai shared that Barkha brings a refreshing perspective to female characters often limited to supporting roles.
She explained that while characters portrayed as wives are often overshadowed Barkha breaks that mold. The character has her own voice her own worldview and the courage to express it. What impressed Sai the most is that Barkha doesn’t define herself by her husband’s success, wealth or public image she maintains her individuality throughout.
Sai also spoke about Barkha’s emotional journey in the series. Initially drawn to the glamour and rising influence of Brij Bhatti Barkha gradually begins to see beyond the surface. As the story progresses she shifts her focus inward discovering her own path and evolving as a person.
For Sai this transformation is what makes Barkha truly compelling. She described the character’s growth as layered and engaging adding that she personally became a fan of Barkha while portraying her.
Created and written by Abhay Koranne and helmed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Matka King features a powerful ensemble cast including Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Siddharth Jadhav and Gulshan Grover among others.
The series is set to premiere on Prime Video on April 17 reaching audiences not just in India but across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
