“It’s About the Math, Not the Gender”: Saif Ali Khan Breaks Down the Pay Parity Debate

The long-standing debate over gender pay disparity in Bollywood has found a fresh perspective. Actor Saif Ali Khan, known for his candid and often intellectual takes on the film industry, recently shared his views on why the “math” of movie-making often dictates the paycheck more than gender does.

Speaking on a recent podcast hosted by his sister, Soha Ali Khan, the Sacred Games star offered a grounded look at the economic realities of the Hindi film industry. Alongside brother-in-law Kunal Kemmu, Saif explained that while he fully supports the idea of equal pay, the industry is primarily driven by a “balanced economic system” tied to box-office pull.

The Stature and the Seats
During the conversation, Saif was clear about his stance on equality: if two actors are of the same professional standing, their pay should reflect that. “If the actors are of equal stature, they should be paid the same amount,” he stated. However, he quickly pivoted to the logistical side of the business—the ability to fill theater seats.

“If you are putting people in seats in the theatre, you get paid accordingly. Everyone understands that relationship,” Saif noted, adding that the system isn’t necessarily designed to favor one gender over another, but rather to reward market value.

A Shifting Tide
While acknowledging that the industry has historically been patriarchal—citing the era of his mother, Sharmila Tagore, and the late Sridevi as times when female stars were massive but underpaid—Saif believes the world is finally “balancing out.” He pointed to modern stars like Kareena Kapoor and Ananya Panday as examples of actors whose market demand has rightfully increased their remuneration.

Kunal Kemmu backed this sentiment, explaining the “mathematical” side of distribution. He noted that in the past, distributors could predict the recovery of a film’s budget based purely on the lead actor’s name. According to the duo, as soon as female-led films begin consistently drawing the same massive crowds as male-led action blockbusters, the pay gap will naturally disappear.

The Producer’s Dilemma
Saif also touched upon the practical constraints of a film’s budget. He explained that a producer’s decision is often based on what the project can realistically sustain. Even for a legendary talent, he argued, a producer cannot justify a massive fee if the specific audience for that film doesn’t support the investment.

Ultimately, his message was one of pragmatism: the industry is a business of demand, and as audience preferences shift toward supporting diverse stars, the paychecks are following suit. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
