Priyamani made her official Hindi debut in Mani Ratnam’s 2010 film Raavan, playing the pivotal role of Jamuni, the sister of Abhishek Bachchan’s character. Given the film’s high profile and Ratnam’s reputation for launching talent, Priyamani admits she had high hopes for her future in Mumbai.
“I honestly thought I would get more Bollywood offers after Raavan,” she shared in a recent interview. “It was a Mani Ratnam film, a huge project, and I felt it would be my stepping stone into the North.”
However, the floodgates didn’t exactly open. Despite receiving critical praise for her performance, the “Bollywood dream” seemed to stall. While she did a few more projects, including a memorable dance number with Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express, she remained primarily a “South Indian star” in the eyes of Hindi filmmakers for nearly a decade.
The Turning Point: The OTT Revolution
For years, the industry often stereotyped her, only reaching out when a “South Indian character” was needed. Priyamani noted that for a long time, many in the Hindi film fraternity didn’t even realize she had been part of Raavan.
Everything changed with the release of the web series The Family Man. Playing the role of Suchitra Iyer, she finally found the pan-India recognition that Raavan hadn’t quite secured.
“None of the Hindi films I did gave me the kind of boost that The Family Man has,” Priyamani admitted. “It opened doors in Mumbai that I didn’t even know were there.”
A New Era of Stardom
Today, Priyamani is no longer waiting for the phone to ring. With major hits like Jawan, Article 370, and Maidaan under her belt, she has become a familiar face to Hindi-speaking audiences. She reflects on her journey with a sense of “quiet confidence,” noting that while the offers didn’t come when she first expected them, they eventually arrived because she stayed true to her talent.
