In a heartfelt tribute to the late veteran actor Asrani, renowned filmmaker Priyadarshan recently shared deep insights into their long-standing professional bond. While discussing their final collaborations, the director made a striking observation about Asrani’s acting prowess, even comparing him to the “Shahenshah” of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan.

A Masterclass in Acting
Priyadarshan, who worked with Asrani on numerous cult classics like Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, and De Dana Dan, refused to label him as just a “comedian.” Instead, he described Asrani as a “complete actor” whose range spanned far beyond making people laugh.

The filmmaker specifically pointed to the 1973 classic Abhimaan, where Asrani played the loyal friend and secretary to Amitabh Bachchan’s character.
“In Abhimaan, he was amazing. Sometimes, I felt he did better than Amitji,” Priyadarshan remarked during a recent interview.

He noted that while Amitabh Bachchan is a global icon, Asrani’s ability to “score” against the lead actor with subtle, perfectly timed responses made him a unique force on screen. This sentiment echoes past comments by Bachchan himself, who once praised Asrani for being the perfect “listener” in a frame, never overdoing his performance to steal the spotlight.

Final On-Screen Appearances
The veteran actor passed away in October 2025 at the age of 84, leaving a void in the industry. His final two films, Bhooth Bangla and Haiwaan, both directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshay Kumar, are set to be a bittersweet farewell for fans.

Priyadarshan shared that working on these final projects was a privilege:
Creative Synergy: The director mentioned that he “exploited Asrani’s comic acumen” one last time in Bhooth Bangla.

The Akshay-Asrani Duo: Fans can expect legendary chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Asrani, with Priyadarshan promising some of the most “hilarious scenes” of the film.

Words of Wisdom
Beyond the camera, Asrani was a mentor to many. Akshay Kumar recalled a poignant piece of advice the veteran gave him during their last days of shooting. According to Kumar, Asrani warned him against the financial risks of film production, sharing personal stories of his own losses in the past.

“He told me, ‘Akshay, don’t ever produce a film with your own money,'” Kumar shared, reflecting on the actor’s honesty and warmth.

A Legacy Beyond Comedy
From playing the iconic “Hitler-esque” jailor in Sholay to a serious antagonist in Koshish, Asrani’s career spanned over five decades and hundreds of films. For Priyadarshan, the loss is personal. He noted that he had directed Asrani in more films than even the legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee, cementing their status as one of Bollywood’s most successful director-actor duos.

As the industry prepares for the release of his final works, the consensus remains: Asrani wasn’t just a sidekick; he was a titan of the craft who kept even the biggest superstars on their toes.
