In a candid new interview that has sent waves through the global entertainment industry, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has opened up about the raw fear she experienced when she walked away from her throne in Bollywood to start from scratch in the United States.

The 43-year-old superstar, who is now a household name in the West, admitted that despite her outward confidence, the transition was far more daunting than it appeared. Speaking with Variety, the Citadel actress revealed that restarting her professional life at age 30 was nothing short of “terrifying.”

Leaving the Safety Net
By 2015, Priyanka was one of the highest-paid and most successful actresses in Indian cinema. Coming off a string of critical and commercial hits like Mary Kom, Bajirao Mastani, and Dil Dhadakne Do, she was at the absolute peak of her powers. Yet, she decided to trade that security for a chance at a global stage—a move many at the time called professional suicide.

“To restart your career in your 30s is terrifying,” Chopra confessed. “I was secure. I was doing well financially. I was established. And I chose to blow it up.”

The actress described the “pavement-pounding” years that followed, highlighting that her success in the U.S. was not an overnight miracle but the result of intense hustle.
Battling Stereotypes and “Novelty” Casting
Even with a Miss World crown and dozens of Indian films under her belt, Hollywood didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet. Chopra recalled walking into rooms where executives were surprised by the most basic things—including her ability to speak English fluently.

“People would be like, ‘Oh, you speak English well.’ There was a preconceived notion of me whenever I went in for a meeting,” she said.
Rather than settling for “novelty casting”—roles that utilized her simply for her ethnicity—Chopra pushed for what she calls “borderless entertainment.” Her goal was to cross-pollinate with actors from different cultures without being restricted by her geography. This persistence eventually led to her historic lead role in the ABC series Quantico, followed by major films like Baywatch and The Matrix Resurrections.

A Career of Calculated Risks
This isn’t the first time the actress has spoken about the instability of the industry. In recent years, she has been vocal about the “dark phases” of her career, including a period in 2008 where six of her films flopped in a single year. Having no “filmy” family or “uncle making movies” for her, she explained that every pivot she made—from Bollywood to pop music, and eventually to Hollywood—was a matter of survival and reinvention.

What’s Next for the Global Icon?
Today, the “terrified” 30-year-old who moved to Los Angeles has been replaced by a seasoned producer and lead actress who finally feels she has the power to choose her projects.

Varanasi: A highly anticipated return to Indian cinema in 2027, directed by the legendary SS Rajamouli.

As she prepares for these massive releases, Chopra’s story serves as a reminder that even the biggest stars feel the weight of starting over. By choosing to “blow up” her comfort zone, she didn’t just find a new career; she built a bridge for an entire generation of South Asian talent to follow.
