A wave of grief and serious safety concerns has hit the Bollywood film industry following a tragic accident on the sets of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated upcoming movie Love & War. A forty-two-year-old carpenter named Chandradhari Singh Yadav lost his life after suffering a severe electric shock during the early hours of production at the Royal Pump Studio in Mumbai’s Film City. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the production banner Bhansali Productions took proactive steps to address the crisis by officially announcing a financial compensation package of forty lakh rupees for the grieving family. While the studio has already issued the financial cheque and is actively coordinating with insurance providers to secure an additional ten to fifteen lakh rupees directly for the dependents, the apex cine body has stepped in to advocate for greater security. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees, universally known as the FWICE, alongside the allied laborers union, has formally demanded that the final compensation amount be raised to fifty lakh rupees to ensure the long-term survival of the deceased technician’s family, who has been left completely shattered by the sudden loss of their sole breadwinner.
Detailing the extreme circumstances leading up to the fatal incident, FWICE General Secretary Ashok Dubey revealed that the carpenter had been enduring an incredibly exhausting work loop just before the accident took place. He noted that the technician had been working continuous daily shifts stretching from seven in the morning until three the next morning, repeating this rigorous twenty-hour routine for three consecutive days on the lavish sets. Preliminary investigations suggest that a sudden short circuit on the set caused the fatal electrocution while lead actress Alia Bhatt was reportedly present in the studio area for her scheduled filming sequences. FWICE President B.N. Tiwari emphasized that no matter how massive a film project or director is, the lives of basic crew members cannot be compromised, leading the federation to demand regulated work shifts and mandatory electrical audits across all shooting spots.
The ongoing discussions between the film bodies and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s team have focused heavily on securing a dignified future for Chandradhari’s wife and his two young daughters, who are currently aged ten and six years old. Beyond the immediate monetary payouts, the director has gracefully agreed to look into providing a stable, suitable job for the victim’s widow within his production house, alongside funding the complete educational requirements of the two young girls.
