Actor Saumya Tandon recently spoke out to defend the film Dhurandhar after it faced public criticism for being allegedly misogynistic.
The debate began on social media when a user accused the spy-thriller of promoting toxic behavior. Saumya, who plays the character Ulfat in the film, countered these claims by highlighting the dignified portrayal of women in the story.
Tandon argued that while the film is set in a “male-dominated world,” the female characters are “treated with dignity.” She pointed out that the women are “not beaten, objectified, or shown as one of many wives,” which are scenarios that the story’s setting could have allowed.
Tandon also noted that the film’s serious and gritty tone means it doesn’t feature glamorous heroines singing songs on exotic beaches, suggesting that the film’s realistic approach limits certain typical Bollywood portrayals.
In essence, Tandon defended the filmmakers’ choice to create complex female characters who maintain their respect and agency, even within a tough, male-focused narrative.
