Filmmaker Suresh Triveni, the man behind the critically acclaimed Tumhari Sulu and the gritty Jalsa, is shifting gears for his next venture. His upcoming project, Maa Behen, has already become one of the most talked-about titles on the 2026 Netflix slate, largely thanks to its inspired casting of Bollywood’s “Evergreen Queen,” Madhuri Dixit-Nene.
In a recent candid conversation, Triveni opened up about the process of securing the legendary actress and why he felt she was the only one who could anchor this “shady” and chaotic world.
No Backup Plan: Madhuri or No One
While many directors create “wish lists” of actors for their projects, Triveni revealed that for the character of Rekha, the script was written with only one face in mind. According to the director, the role required a rare blend of grace and sharp-witted mischief—a combination he believes is Madhuri’s superpower.
“When we were writing the screenplay, there was no ‘Plan B’ for this role,” Triveni admitted. “I told my team that we are going to Madhuri ma’am first, and if she says no, only then will we think about how to move forward. Luckily, she connected with the script’s quirkiness during the very first narration.”
Exploring the “Dark Side” of Comedy
While the audience has seen Madhuri in various comedic roles over her decades-long career, Maa Behen promises a brand of humor that is far more irreverent and “pulp.”
The film follows a dysfunctional family consisting of a mother (Madhuri) and her two daughters (played by Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga). Their lives take a wildly unexpected turn when they find themselves dealing with a dead body in their kitchen—turning a standard family dynamic into a high-stakes, hilarious mess.
The Transformation: Triveni noted that Madhuri had to shed her “Diva” persona to play Rekha, a woman who is uninhibited and slightly messy.
The Dialect: To ensure authenticity, the actress spent weeks perfecting a specific regional dialect, proving that her dedication to the craft remains as sharp as ever.
A Masterclass in Professionalism
Beyond her performance, Triveni expressed his admiration for the work ethic Madhuri brought to the set. Despite her stature, she participated in over a dozen intensive workshop sessions alongside her younger co-stars to build the essential “mother-daughter” chemistry.
“Seeing her collaborate with Triptii and Dharna was beautiful,” the director shared. “She didn’t come to the set as a superstar; she came as an actor ready to play. There is a reason why she is the ‘OG.’ Her energy is infectious, and she has this incredible ability to make the most absurd situations feel grounded and real.”
The Road Ahead
Produced by Abundantia Entertainment, Maa Behen is positioning itself as a bold departure from the typical Bollywood family drama. With Ravi Kishan also joining the cast, the film is expected to be a colorful, fast-paced thriller that challenges the traditional image of the “Indian Mother.”
As fans eagerly await the first trailer, Triveni’s confidence suggests that we are about to see a side of Madhuri Dixit that the silver screen has never quite captured before. To know such latest updates tuned tellyboosters.com Thank you!
