Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is currently in discussions to develop a high-profile romantic drama series aimed at the international market. The project is being positioned as a tent-pole OTT offering for a major global streaming platform.
Sources reveal that the series is inspired by the popular U.S. novel My Name Is Memory with Kapur set to helm the project as creator, director, and producer. The series is being developed for Amazon Studios (U.S.) highlighting its strong international orientation and large-scale vision.
This project is not being viewed as a shift back to Indian-centric storytelling. Instead it aligns with Kapur’s long-established presence in global cinema. He first drew worldwide attention with powerful Indian films like Bandit Queen and Masoom before achieving international acclaim with Elizabeth the Oscar-nominated historical epic that received recognition in eight Academy Award categories.
Kapur’s more recent work What’s Love Got to Do with It? further strengthened his global standing. The film featuring Emma Thompson, Lily James and Shabana Azmi went on to win Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the UK National Film Awards reaffirming his ability to tell culturally fluid globally resonant stories.
At the same time the filmmaker is also preparing Masoom: The Next Generation a follow-up to his iconic classic revisiting the subtle emotionally grounded storytelling that once defined his early career.
This development comes on the heels of a major personal honor. In 2025 Shekhar Kapur was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his lasting impact on cinema across national boundaries. Industry watchers see this upcoming romance series as a natural continuation of his international journey marked by ambition, scale, and a storytelling voice that transcends borders.
